Charlestown’s Christmas in the City

Charlestown, Indiana turns on its Christmas lights the Friday after Thanksgiving every year. We think the display is worth the trip over the new Lewis & Clark Bridge to Southern Indiana.

This display can easily be enjoyed both in your vehicle or walking around. Charlestown welcomes visitors to take in the beautiful lights, light shows, decorations and other attractions.

Light Show

The lighting ceremony is on Friday, November 24, 2023. The switch will be flipped at 7pm on Friday at Greenway Park. The FREE animated lights in the town square are on nightly until January 1st 6:00-10:00pm.  Parking is available around the square and around area businesses.

There are several different “shows” to enjoy.  The lights are spectacular and highly entertaining.  We saw a USA, Red Baron, Peanuts and Frosty themes in the short time that we walked around the display.  The music is loud or you can tune to a radio station if you want to stay in your car.  In the middle of the display are several large screens that play short videos and have even more light displays.  The trees are covered, the grass has holiday characters and it snows during one of the shows!  You can even see Santa’s sleigh and two snowmen having a snowball fight.  Overhead are stars and more lights.  This is the largest light display in Southern Indiana!

Greenway Park

If you aren’t there on opening night, make sure you walk across the street to Greenway Park to see more holiday lights. The covered bridges are so beautiful. They also have a great new playground! Greenway Park’s address is 399 Market Street Charlestown, Indiana. Check out his list of nightly activities at Greenway Park.

Family Activities Park

The activities held at the Family Activities Park are another way to enjoy your visit to Charlestown.  Train rides, mini golf, Santa & Grinch visits and more holiday lights can be enjoyed.  The Winter Holiday Market is  will be set up selling holiday goods. The Activities Park is located at 1000 Park St. Santa visits are free and other activities have a small per person fee.  Here is a list of special events planned on select dates at the Family Activities Park.
