Hiking at Harrods Creek Park

Sometimes our family needs to get out together for fresh air, exploring and a little exercise.

We like to visit Harrods Creek Park in Prospect to do these things together. This wooded park offers visitors several hiking and walking trails to explore. 

Directions to the park can be found here and parking is available close to the trails in the Hunting Creek neighborhood.

There are four trails at the park identified by colors. The elevation ranges with each one and the terrain varies from grass, heavily wooded and dirt. Our family didn’t find the trails difficult to walk. If you stick along the creek, you’re less likely to find shaded areas as you are up in the woods. During the warmer months, the wooded trails have thicker brush and taller grasses, which can be a nuisance to sensitive skin. Just prepare ahead of time with appropriate attire.

There are several benches, swings and small wooden bridges along the trails. We enjoyed the swings that offered views over grassy fields and of Harrods Creek. There are several smaller benches closer to the creek where we saw families fishing together or just sitting enjoying the views. The wooden bridges allow you to cross over natural creeks; some are large with waterfalls and some smaller ones.

For those that like to enjoy their time floating down Harrods Creek, the park has a launch site to put in your kayak or canoe. One summer we rented kayaks from Nachand Canoe & Kayak and saw Harrods Creek Park from our kayaks. There are spots on the trails that lead to sandy beaches along the creek if you desire to explore the water life on land. Keep an eye out for wildlife like turtles basking in the sun on a log, deer and even snakes.

Our family generally spends about 1.5 hours in the park walking at a leisurely pace. Several distance markers and directional signs are along the trails. There is an interactive trail map online to help direct you also. We were able to always connect to the internet also if we wanted to see our location.

Harrods Creek Park is beautiful and a great gem just outside of the Oldham County line. It is a short drive from southern Oldham County. Enjoy the trails together as a family!
