Sauerbeck Family Drive-In Groundbreaking Ceremony

 photo SAUERBECK FAMILY_zpsrul9vejl.png

photo family_zpsqaxw9itp.jpgThere might be snow on the ground now, but soon the grass will be greener, the sun will be warm and summer will start!  The start of summer will include an exciting new drive-in movie theater in Kentucky!  Oldham County is lucky to have the Sauerbeck Family Drive-In opening in June 2018.

Today was the ground breaking ceremony for the drive-in.  We met on the walking path along Commerce Parkway across from the new Watts Home Center in LaGrange.  The Sauerbeck family along with county officials and Oldham County residents were present to celebrate this exciting new addition to the community.

The drive-in is a huge asset to Oldham County and the surrounding areas.  We imagine families from Louisville, Shelby County, Henry County and beyond will utilize the new theater.  It's located close to I-71 and minutes from the Gene Snyder Freeway.  At it's completion, the theater will have two 80' wide, 40' tall screens.  There will be one screen opening this summer that can host 450 cars.  The room for the second screen will hold an additional 350 cars.

photo CLAPPING_zpsekqmfnjw.jpgStephen Sauerbeck promises a family-friendly experience.  Double features will be shown, admission cost will be per person ($11 adults & $6 children) and concessions will be served.  There are different pre-sale packages available for purchase now.

We can't wait for movies under the stars and to see what the Sauerbeck Family Drive-In Theater will bring to Oldham County!

The Kindness Club

 photo THE KINDNESS CLUB_zpsodn5v7oh.png

photo IMG_2543_zpsj8h4v4i9.jpgYou probably have heard the expression "Choose Kind" quite a bit these past couple of years due to the popular children's book and now movie, "Wonder."  Drawing from the book's message, the Oldham County Public Library started The Kindness Club.  This new monthly community service program is open to elementary aged children and has 1-2 sessions a month. The response to the new program has been overwhelming!

The program started with the children introducing themselves.  I liked this introduction part, because after all, it's a club, the children should also get to know each other.  Librarian, Susan Bunting read the picture book, "We're All Wonders" by R.J. Palacio.  There was a brief discussion on kindness and the children were eager to share their thoughts and ideas.  They shared ways they have seen others show kindness and they also brainstormed ways the club could help the community for future monthly dates.  It was moving to hear the thoughts of the young children.

photo IMG_2538_zpshmgfd3az.jpgSo far, the Kindness Club has created Valentine's Day cards for members of the Oldham County community and then switched it up and made bird feeders and nesting bags to take home.  Each project chosen is one that can be done at the library together. There is a good variety of grades represented and the content is appropriate for each elementary age level.

My children end up leaving feeling joyful and eager to think of ways to show kindness to those around them.  I love that the club asks children to think of how to show kindness, but also teaches them to recognize it around them.

New "members" are always welcome, but make sure you register online early because this is a popular program.  So far, the program is meeting at the Main Branch in LaGrange, but always check the children's calendar for recent information.

Cailin Art Studio

 photo Cailin_zps78oyl4aq.png

A new art studio opened up over the weekend in Crestwood.  The building that once sat as an abandoned daycare center has been transformed into Cailin Art Studio.  The space is now clean, fresh and waiting for visitors to use it for creative purposes.

The studio is owned and operated by Sean Fitzgerald and Ivy Clinton.  Sean has several years of art teaching experience and Ivy is an Oldham County native.  We love that they have returned to Crestwood to offer new art classes to the community.

The studio is equipped for all skill-levels and there are already classes and workshops on their events calendar.  Students can explore painting, drawing, clay, craft arts and other mediums.  The ceramics studio has worktables, 6 electric wheels, two kick wheels and a slab roller.  There are also glazes, kilns, stamps and several other finishing tools.

During the open house event, my children were able to freely explore creating ornaments with clay, cookie cutters and different stamping tools.  Sean also allowed for children to work with clay on the wheel.  He was very encouraging and laid-back with the children.  My two children did not want to leave the wheel and found it fascinating how quickly the clay changes form.

One of the class offerings that caught our attention is the Art Together: Preschool Class.  Grown ups are encouraged to work alongside their preschool aged child during these morning classes.  They meet Thursday & Saturday 10-11:30am.  For $15 per class, per family, preschoolers can experience working with clay, creating pinch pots and other artwork.  This is a great new option for preschool parents!

Private parties, birthday parties, date nights, sewing lessons, jewelry making and book binding are just a few of the other classes you can find at Cailin Art Studio.  The couple has plans to expand on the class offerings once they are settled and add more staff.

We look forward to returning to Cailin Art Studio for more creative fun.  Make sure to follow them on Facebook, Instagram and their website to keep up with class offerings and special events.  The studio is located at 7910 Floydsburg Road in Crestwood and is close to the east end of Louisville.
