Charlestown's Christmas in the City

 photo Charlestowns christmas city_zpsccxfobxp.png

Now is the perfect time to go check out Charlestown, Indiana's Christmas City.  The new Lewis & Clark Bridge makes getting to Southern Indiana a lot more convenient for Oldham County residents!

Official kick off is the Friday after Thanksgiving!

 photo charlestown christmas display_zpstqtguqla.jpegLight Show
The FREE animated lights in the town square are on nightly through January 1st 6:00-11:00pm.  This is a drive or walk around display.  Parking is available around the square and around area businesses.

There are several different "shows" to enjoy.  The lights are spectacular and highly entertaining.  We saw a USA, Red Baron, Peanuts and Frosty themes in the short time that we walked around the display.  The music is loud or you can tune to a radio station if you want to stay in your car.  In the middle of the display are several large screens that play short videos and have even more light displays.  The trees are covered, the grass has holiday characters and it snows during one of the shows!  You can even see Santa's sleigh and two snowmen having a snowball fight.  Overhead are stars and more lights.  This is the largest light display in Southern Indiana!

Greenway Park
Make sure you walk across the street to Greenway Park to see more holiday lights.  You can also purchase hot chocolate, hot cider and other refreshments from the snack bar on Fridays and Saturdays (bring cash). The covered bridges are so beautiful.  If the weather is nice, enjoy the playground at the park, too! Greenway Park's address is 399 Market Street Charlestown, Indiana

 photo tree_zpsxjca6jbf.jpgFamily Activities Park
Down the street near Charlestown High School is the Family Activities Park located at 1000 Park Street.  Here you can enjoy ice skating, train rides, mini golf and more holiday lights!

Activities open: Monday-Thursday 6-9pm, Friday & Saturday 6-10pm $5 admission per person (ages 2 and up), per activity. Activities available until December 30th (closed on Christmas Eve and Day). Santa will be here on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 6-9pm

The train goes by the holiday light display in the square.

(The Family Activities Park is open after the New Year also so be sure to check out their website for more information!)

This boutique has quality goods handmade by organizations offering economic empowerment & abundant life around the world. There is a personal story behind each crafted item -choose a one of a kind item that's special to you or your loved one. Women's clothing and jewelry, journals, children's items, home décor and more. Located in Crestwood.

photo 4faf82ad-9b4b-4c5e-9db1-e2fae51d1506_zpsy93nirl3.jpgMercantile on Main - This is a store you do not want to pass by in LaGrange.  Inside the teal building, you'll find a mixture of handmade, vintage and repurposed goods.  We especially love the bourbon barrel and tobacco stick products.  There are great gifts for men, women and children.  Grab a delicate Kentucky themed necklace, a set of bourbon glasses or vintage ornament for that special person on your list.  Many of the gifts are customizable, too!  When you shop here you support several local artisans like Curry's Beer Crafts, Porch Light Studios and Tobacco Barn Craftsman.

photo elanors_zpssh1sh4oe.jpgEleanor's Room - Fairly new to Oldham County, Eleanor's Room is a warm, inviting space located down Floydsburg Road in Crestwood.  They specialize in custom home décor and furniture, but you can also find ready to purchase home goods in the store.  This is my go-to store when I need to find something for those on my list that love to cook.  Their kitchen ware and baking utensils are unique and sweet, not something you'll find at the mall.  If you have a young aspiring cook, make sure you check out their oh-so-cute children's aprons.  If you're ambitious and want to refinish your own piece of furniture, you can find the tools needed for the project at Eleanor's Room.

photo 65df4320-6d9c-4dfc-856e-1d399634588a_zpse0kjc6ce.jpgPicked N' Painted - Kim Silcox and her team have transformed Picked N' Painted into a magical winter wonderland.  The store is located on Main Street in downtown LaGrange and is beautifully decorated with all of your holiday hosting and gifting needs.  I lost count of how many trees are up in the store, but each one has a unique theme with coordinating bows and ornaments.  The fun and sassy tea towels are great hostess gifts.  We like the customizable signs ranging from bible verses to family names.  Your dining room banquet table will not be bare after you visit Picked N' Painted and see all of the holiday décor.

photo 0c8e0a5e-ab7d-4e83-8f43-f7ec251c920e_zps6ohyiito.jpgWaxy Beans - You might be thinking, "Where is this store?"  I best describe it as, "Right down the road from Dairy Queen in Crestwood, near the House of Soccer store." Waxy Beans has a lovely owner ready to help you with your shopping needs.  I have purchased several gifts customized for special girlfriends and teachers.  Their handmade candles are one of a kind and are literally the best candle I have burned in my home.  The store items are very affordable and represent many local artisans from Oldham County and the surrounding area.  Make sure you stop by this store when you're out shopping this season.

photo e6e28884-6980-48d1-818e-740d7e416c02_zpshptstkk3.jpgFeed and Seed Depot - Another Crestwood favorite is this small garden and feed center.  If you have a gardener on your list, stop in this store.  We know it's hard to think of gardening when it's so cold outside, but your purchase will be appreciated once the warmer months return.  The owners and staff are knowledgeable and friendly and will help you find what you need.  They have gifts for non-gardeners also.  Pick out some succulents and ask for help making a creative arrangement.  These make great hostess or teacher gifts.  Their farm fresh eggs and other ingredients can help you make that dish you have to take to the holiday party.  Pair the local honey with some tea and a cute mug from one of the other stores listed in this directory.

photo 9afcb873-c9d9-4ed6-afb1-8f57c7018e9c_zpsssuxt806.jpgCailin Art Studio - Family owned and operated Cailin Art Studio is located in Crestwood and shares a building with another one of our favorites, Eleanor's Room.  The studio offers several art medium classes for all ages.  Experience gifts are great to give and receive during a season of collecting an abundance of "things."  Gift certificates are available if you don't know which class or workshop to choose for your special person.  Or perhaps you want to take a class and create a unique gift for someone to unwrap?  Cailin Art Studio also has several ceramic pieces already fired and available for purchase.

photo aff7ac3d-302c-4ccd-a86b-cfcc9566deed_zpsvntobwdt.jpgThe Treasured Child - This Main Street LaGrange store has unique gifts for children of all ages.  What we love the most in the store are the games and books that they offer.  We can always find a fun board game that won't be on the shelves in chain stores.  Their books range from baby to cool journals for children that love to write.  You can find big toys and small stocking stuffers at The Treasured Child.

New pediatrician option in Crestwood and south Oldham County

Dr. Mattingly Crestwood pediatrician

A working mom herself, Dr. Mattingly brings crazy socks and a passion for children to Oldham County’s newest pediatrician office

When AprilR. Mattingly, M.D., walked into her pediatrics rotation as a medical student at the University of Louisville, she knew she belonged.

“There was nothing else I wanted to do,” said Dr. Mattingly, who is raising two young children of her own. “It’s such an optimistic place to be. Kids make work fun.”

As the newest pediatrician in Crestwood, Kentucky, in Oldham County, Dr. Mattingly brings her crazy socks and supply of stickers along to make her young patients laugh.

She recalls one of her first patients, a young boy who needed a strep test but was fighting the throat swab with everything he had. She was able to get the sample but hated to see him upset.

She returned with the results a short time later. He greeted her with a smile and a picture he’d drawn for her.

“You’re like Spiderman,” the young patient said, “because you’re cool.”
Dr. Mattingly Crestwood pediatrician
“Here I was feeling so worried about him and he was just so resilient,” Dr. Mattingly said. “At least the swab was not in vain — he did have strep throat.”

A working mom

Dr. Mattingly is now practicing at the newly opened Norton Children’s Medical Associates – Crestwood office between Walmart and the South Oldham schools’ campus on Highway 329 near Interstate 71.

As a working mom, she understands the scheduling demands on today’s families.

Both her children — daughter, Gabbi, age 7, and son, Ben, age 4 — have had medical issues of their own. When parents come to her with a problem, she is ready to listen and help.

“I can relate to being that parent in the hospital,” Dr. Mattingly said. “My kids have had their share of trials, so I always tell parents there are no stupid questions. I have been there.”

Tackling childhood obesity
In her spare time, Dr. Mattingly is learning to crochet (putting dinosaur spikes on her son’s crocheted hat). She also loves to volunteer at her kids’ schools and Northeast Christian Church, where she is a member.

Her obsession, however, is with tackling obesity in children. Earlier in her career, she worked for a company that helped children manage their weight to avoid medical complications. She worked with a dietitian, a psychologist and an exercise physiologist to help children and parents focus on diet and food planning, physical activity and supporting each other emotionally.

Dr. Mattingly understands how hard it can be to make healthy food choices over cheaper, convenient and less healthy ones. She still loves to educate and support parents and children on choosing better foods and keeping everyone healthy.

“It takes an extra effort, but we have a generation of kids that won’t live as long if we don’t start making better choices now,” she said. “Prevention is key.”
A big part of that prevention is as simple as getting regular checkups with a pediatrician.
“The best part is watching them grow — babies especially,” Dr. Mattingly said. “It’s all just fun!”
