Christmas Lights around Oldham County

 photo Christmas Lights facebook app_zpslrgbroqg.png

The last few nights have been unusually free for our family so we used the time to go Christmas light hunting.  During our two nights of driving around Southern Oldham County, we found some great displays and wanted to share them with you.  We also wanted to share some fun ideas for you and your family to do this holiday season.  Nothing fancy, mostly cheap and full of fun memories.

photo backseat fun_zpspaorcjyz.jpgWhen my kids were younger (and I was too), each year I would surprise them with one night full of Christmas light fun.  One year I did a Polar Express theme where each kid received a golden ticket that got punched at different stops (Starbucks for hot cocoa, Little Ceasers for pizza etc).  I decorated our car windows with fun holiday messages, put battery powered lights in the interior, passed out glow necklaces and funny holiday headbands (all from Dollar Tree).  Each kid also got a scavenger hunt list and marker to use during the Christmas light trip.

Now I realize the holidays are busy and I've already lost some of you.  You don't have to create a Polar Express each year for your kids.  Simply drive around some of Oldham County's neighborhoods and make your own fun.  See who can spot the most unique display.  Who likes traditional white lights and who likes the bright lights?  Can you find the biggest and best displays?

photo sheets_zpsml6zc9lo.jpgIf we could give an award for most participation in a neighborhood it would go to Cherrywood in LaGrange.  We found other great displays in Washington Manor in LaGrange, Camden Manor in Crestwood and Heritage Place in Crestwood.  Some other places worth mentioning are Brentwood in Crestwood and the magnificent display on the corner of US Hwy 42 and Hayfield Way in the Countryside neighborhood in Prospect.

Now these are only a handful of the neighborhoods in Oldham County.  Grab some hot chocolate or a treat, get in the car and go explore the lights.  There are some really great displays.

Watch our video to see what's around for 2018.

If you need a scavenger hunt list specific to Oldham County here are some ideas:
  • Decorated horse
  • Buddy the elf
  • Ralphie from The Christmas Story
  • A "JOY" sign
  • Santa in a window
  • Grinch stealing lights
  • A hot dog
  • Dragon blowup
  • Dinosaur blowup
  • White trees
  • Light tunnels
  • A "Mickey" house
  • Nativity
  • Charlie Brown
  • Abominable Snowman
  • R2D2
  • Santa falling off a roof

Crestwood Festival of Nativities

 photo Festival of Nativities_zpsjodqphox.png

photo IMG_1327_zps8fgtr05o.jpgChances are if you celebrate Christmas, you are familiar with the nativity scene and might even have one displayed in your home during this holiday season.  The Church of Latter Day Saints in Crestwood hosts the annual event, Festival of Nativities, where the community is invited to visit and view 600 displays of nativities from around the world.

The room filled with nativities is beautifully decorated and set up by several volunteers.  The lights are dimmed and tabletops are adorned with winterscapes, white lights and unique nativities. Visitors will see traditional Nacimiento, a living nativity, porcelain, wooden, gingerbread and more varieties.

There is more to the event, too.  The Festival of Nativities has children's activities, live concerts each night performed by community choirs and musicians, family photo opportunities, cookies and nativity story tours.

 photo IMG_1333_zpszkufzhka.jpg
What began in 2009 as a way to help bring measure of the Christmas spirit to the community has turned into a tradition for many in Oldham County and the surrounding area.  Share the meaning of Christmas during one of the three days of the event.  It is free and open to everyone.

Church of Latter Day Saints is located at 6401 Westwind Way Crestwood, KY 40014

The 2018 times are 6:30-9pm on these dates:

Friday, December 7

Living Nativity at Ballardsville Baptist Church

 photo Graphic_zps4albzxor.png

photo IMG_0867_zps17zpdbvh.jpg Take a journey through Bethlehem at Ballardsville Baptist Church at their drive-thru Living Nativity.  Each year, in December, the church hosts one night where the community is invited to experience the Christmas story in the comfort of their vehicles.

As you turn off Highway 53 and arrive at the church, you are greeted by Roman soldiers guiding traffic.  Look for the signs with instructions on which radio station to tune into to hear the Christmas story narrated over your vehicle's speakers.

On the right side of the parking lot, see if you can see the three wise men with their (real) camels making their way to Bethlehem.  You will also see shepherds in their field with their sheep.  Listen to the choir singing and take in the sights and sounds of the marketplace.  Look for the Inn and the "No Vacancy" sign toward the end of the marketplace.

photo IMG_0866_zpsjwnd41es.jpgOn the outside of town, you will find Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in the manger.  Outside is their donkey and above the manger is the bright star of Bethlehem guiding the three wise men. Keep driving to the church's carport for a treat for everyone in your car.  In the past, hot chocolate and cookies were passed out.

Ballardsville Baptist Church does a wonderful job with this free community event.  Although the drive is only about five minutes from start to finish, you will get lost in the scenes around you.  The animals and actors depicting the Christmas story will make you feel like you're in Bethlehem.  The Living Nativity is a lovely and unique tradition for many Oldham County and surrounding area residents.

The 2018 Living Nativity is on Saturday, December 8th. 6-8:30pm
Ballardsville Baptist Church is located at 4300 South Highway 53 Crestwood, Ky 40014
