Living Nativity at Ballardsville Baptist Church

Take a journey through Bethlehem at Ballardsville Baptist Church at their drive-thru Living Nativity. Each year, in December, the church hosts one night where the community is invited to experience the Christmas story in the comfort of their vehicles.

 photo Graphic_zps4albzxor.png

 photo IMG_0867_zps17zpdbvh.jpg
As you turn off Highway 53 and arrive at the church, you are greeted by Roman soldiers guiding traffic.  Look for the signs with instructions on which radio station to tune into to hear the Christmas story narrated over your vehicle's speakers.

On the right side of the parking lot, see if you can see the three wise men with their (real) camels making their way to Bethlehem.  You will also see shepherds in their field with their sheep.  Listen to the choir singing and take in the sights and sounds of the marketplace.  Look for the Inn and the "No Vacancy" sign toward the end of the marketplace.

photo IMG_0866_zpsjwnd41es.jpgOn the outside of town, you will find Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in the manger.  Outside is their donkey and above the manger is the bright star of Bethlehem guiding the three wise men. Keep driving to the church's carport for a treat for everyone in your car.  In the past, hot chocolate and cookies were passed out.

Ballardsville Baptist Church does a wonderful job with this free community event.  Although the drive is only about five minutes from start to finish, you will get lost in the scenes around you.  The animals and actors depicting the Christmas story will make you feel like you're in Bethlehem.  The Living Nativity is a lovely and unique tradition for many Oldham County and surrounding area residents.

The 2019 Living Nativity is on Saturday, December 14th. 6-8:30pm
Ballardsville Baptist Church is located at 4300 South Highway 53 Crestwood, Ky 40014

Charlestown's Christmas in the City

Now is the perfect time to go check out Charlestown, Indiana's Christmas City. The new Lewis & Clark Bridge makes getting to Southern Indiana a lot more convenient for Oldham County residents! Official kick off is the Friday after Thanksgiving!
 photo Charlestowns christmas city_zpsccxfobxp.png

 photo charlestown christmas display_zpstqtguqla.jpegLight Show
The FREE animated lights in the town square are on nightly through December 29th 6:00-11:00pm.  This is a drive or walk around display.  Parking is available around the square and around area businesses.

There are several different "shows" to enjoy.  The lights are spectacular and highly entertaining.  We saw a USA, Red Baron, Peanuts and Frosty themes in the short time that we walked around the display.  The music is loud or you can tune to a radio station if you want to stay in your car.  In the middle of the display are several large screens that play short videos and have even more light displays.  The trees are covered, the grass has holiday characters and it snows during one of the shows!  You can even see Santa's sleigh and two snowmen having a snowball fight.  Overhead are stars and more lights.  This is the largest light display in Southern Indiana!

Greenway Park
Make sure you walk across the street to Greenway Park to see more holiday lights.  Carriage rides are available Fridays and Saturdays in December 6-10pm for $5 per person. You can also purchase hot chocolate, hot cider and other refreshments from the snack bar on Fridays and Saturdays (bring cash). The covered bridges are so beautiful.  If the weather is nice, enjoy the playground at the park, too! Greenway Park's address is 399 Market Street Charlestown, Indiana

 photo tree_zpsxjca6jbf.jpgFamily Activities Park
Down the street near Charlestown High School is the Family Activities Park located at 1000 Park Street.  Here you can enjoy ice skating, train rides, mini golf and more holiday lights!

Activities open: Monday-Thursday 6-9pm, Friday & Saturday 6-10pm $5 admission per person (ages 2 and up), per activity. Activities available until December 23rd (closed on Christmas Eve and Day).

The train goes by the holiday light display in the square.

(The Family Activities Park is open after the New Year also so be sure to check out their website for more information!)

 photo small business saturday_zpsvufeusgv.png

Not only will you find one of a kind items and activities, you will develop relationships with business owners living in your community! We started with a brief description of a few of our favorite places to shop in Oldham County.

And don't forget about all of the yummy restaurants, salons and spas, dance studios, gymnastics and more. Many have specials or gift certificates available. Check out our Experience Gifts List.

Some of our local favorites (scroll down for SEVERAL more)...

photo 6076a74a-43e7-4194-814d-e19b031e5c5c_zpsxgshhhit.jpgAddie's Goods - If your loved one has a heart for helping others then Addie's Goods is the place to shop. This boutique has quality goods handmade by organizations offering economic empowerment & abundant life around the world. There is a personal story behind each crafted item -choose a one of a kind item that's special to you or your loved one. Women's clothing and jewelry, journals, children's items, home décor and more. Located in Crestwood.

photo 4faf82ad-9b4b-4c5e-9db1-e2fae51d1506_zpsy93nirl3.jpgMercantile on Main - This is a store you do not want to pass by in LaGrange.  Inside the teal building, you'll find a mixture of handmade, vintage and repurposed goods.  We especially love the bourbon barrel and tobacco stick products.  There are great gifts for men, women and children.  Grab a delicate Kentucky themed necklace, a set of bourbon glasses or vintage ornament for that special person on your list.  Many of the gifts are customizable, too!  When you shop here you support several local artisans like Curry's Beer Crafts, Porch Light Studios and Tobacco Barn Craftsman.

photo 65df4320-6d9c-4dfc-856e-1d399634588a_zpse0kjc6ce.jpgPicked N' Painted - Each year Picked N' Painted is transformed into a magical winter wonderland.  The store is located on Main Street in downtown LaGrange and is beautifully decorated with all of your holiday hosting and gifting needs.  I lost count of how many trees are up in the store, but each one has a unique theme with coordinating bows and ornaments.  The fun and sassy tea towels are great hostess gifts.  We like the customizable signs ranging from bible verses to family names.  Your dining room banquet table will not be bare after you visit Picked N' Painted and see all of the holiday décor.

photo e6e28884-6980-48d1-818e-740d7e416c02_zpshptstkk3.jpgFeed and Seed Depot - Another Crestwood favorite is this small garden and feed center.  If you have a gardener on your list, stop in this store.  We know it's hard to think of gardening when it's so cold outside, but your purchase will be appreciated once the warmer months return.  The owners and staff are knowledgeable and friendly and will help you find what you need.  They have gifts for non-gardeners also.  Pick out some succulents and ask for help making a creative arrangement.  These make great hostess or teacher gifts.  Their farm fresh eggs and other ingredients can help you make that dish you have to take to the holiday party.  Pair the local honey with some tea and a cute mug from one of the other stores listed in this directory.

photo little kentucky river winery_zpsampvtci1.jpg The Little Kentucky River Winery - If you're headed to a holiday party or hosting, pick up some wine from this local winery.  They have a variety to choose from.  Their Oldham County location is in LaGrange, right along the railway tracks on Main Street.  A couple of bottles of local wine will be appreciated by your 21 and over friends and family.

Knock on Wood Country Mercantile - We have said it before, but this restaurant/store is a hidden gem in Wesport, Oldham County.   Their inventory is always changing, but visitors can find great home goods, clothing, jewelry, candles, holiday items, furniture and more!
