Oldham County Day!

Celebrate our beautiful county in July!

photo Oldham County Day 2017 header_zpsuphzqke4.png
photo police_zpsmbdamkck.jpgOldham County Day is always celebrated the 3rd Saturday in July in Downtown LaGrange.  The 2019 date is July 20th and the theme is "Music Man."

Enjoy an all you can eat pancake breakfast on Saturday morning at the LaGrange Community Center on Jefferson Street 7-10:00am. There is a cost for the breakfast.
  • After you enjoy the pancakes, get set up to watch the parade in Downtown LaGrange.  The parade route begins near LaGrange Elementary School on West Jefferson Street. The route is opposite this year.  Participants will parade down Fifth Street to Main Street, turn left onto Main Street, parade to Walnut Street and take a left, up to Jefferson Street and will end at Fourth Street. The parade usually starts around 9:30am.  Make sure you arrive early to find a great spot to watch the parade!  Anticipate seeing the Grand Marshall, local school marching bands, tractors, horses, fire trucks, church, local business and other group floats that match the parade's theme for the year.
photo living statues_zpskqzjxx2f.jpgCheck out the over 120 booths on the courthouse square.  Many of the booths feature local businesses and organizations in the Oldham County area.  Meet local politicians, learn more about locally owned businesses, churches, maybe get a freebie or enter a raffle!  Food and drinks are also on the courthouse square.  In the past, a lot of the booths had kid-friendly giveaways (like Dairy Queen ice cream coupons), bounce houses and balloon artists and visitors saw living statues.
There is a lot of entertainment planned before and after the parade.  Listen to music while you're at the festival.  There is a great lineup of various artists.  Head to LaGrange Christian Church for children's Carnival 11am-1pm.  The Great Train Robbery, a cookout, face painting, and free tours will be at the Railroad Museum. It's definitely worth checking out the courthouse square and surrounding attractions after the parade!

Arrive early for parking! You can also sometimes find parking along the side streets surrounding the square and some local residents open their property (sometimes for a fee).

photo train robbery_zps26oubdh5.jpgAnd of course, always check out the other businesses in LaGrange!  A lot of the businesses and restaurants have special hours and activities during Oldham County Day!
Make sure you check the official Oldham County Day website and Facebook page for updates on this special event.  We wanted to allow our readers to have a general idea of what to expect during Oldham County Day, but realize that activities, event times and entertainment acts are subject to change each year.

Fitz Freeze Frozen Treats in LaGrange

It's heating up in Oldham County and lucky for us, we have several places to grab a cool treat!

 photo Fitz Frozen Treats_zpshrem3weg.jpg

Fitz Freeze Frozen Treats is in its second season in Oldham County.  It is now located at 4411 West Highway 146 in Buckner.  You can't miss the bright blue building and signage from Highway 146 close to Buckner Elementary School and Oldham County Middle School.

photo Elin shaved ice_zpsq2lcfode.jpgWe stopped in last year to try some Hawaiian shaved ice.  With 60 flavors to choose from, it was hard to settle on a final decision.  We ended up trying Mango Tango, Cotton Candy Blue and Angel Food Cake.  Of course, we all tried each other's flavors and agreed that they were all very yummy.  There are mixes already figured out for you or you can get up to 3 flavors in your cup of your own choosing.  Some unique flavors we noticed were Banana Cream Pie, Bug Juice, and Popeye.  You'll have to visit to figure out how they taste.

This Oldham County, family-owned business has a great mission statement which visitors can read next to the order window.  The treats started out as a hobby for the children to learn how to count money and learn workforce skills to apply in the future.  They are helping in the bus and are very friendly and respectful.  The tips they receive help them earn money toward vehicles when they turn 16 and then anything extra will go toward college.  We love that this family is working together and teaching important skills.

photo ice cream sign_zpsopeglwbk.jpgWe thought the price was reasonable for the shaved ice: small $3, medium $4 and a large $5.  A small was plenty and the perfect size for my 6 year old.  Fitz Freeze also has a cream topping that you can add to your shaved ice for an extra $1.  If you're not in the mood for shaved ice, they also offer ice cream ranging in price from $2.50-$5.00.  Cash and credit cards are accepted.

Support this new treat spot and follow Fitz Freeze on Facebook to keep up with hours, specials, renting the truck and more.  There are plenty of options and space to sit under a bright blue umbrella to enjoy your treat.

They are open every day 12-9pm

Quads Rod & Custom Car Show in LaGrange

LaGrange always has something fun going on and the summer brings more time to take advantage of the fun with your family.

photo Quads Rod amp Custom Car Show 2_zpsqqlhxak3.png

If you're looking for a low-key, fun activity to do with your family in the warmer months, then you should check out the Quads Rod & Custom Car Show in Downtown LaGrange.  The car show is set up every 4th Saturday of the month, beginning in May and going through September and is FREE.

image description image description
My son loves cars and learning about them, so this car show is perfect for him to experience many makes and models.  The cars are set up along Main and 2nd Streets in Downtown LaGrange and the streets are closed to traffic.  The car owners love to share about their passion for their collector car and my kids love to hear about them.  Their many questions are answered and they learn new interesting facts about restoration and the development of the car.  They love to hear the year of the cars and compare the difference between the collector car and the present day car.  My husband and I also love to hear the many stories associated with the cars.  Some car owners have cards for children to take with them or will allow children to sit in the car for a picture.

Many different cars, hot rods, trucks, custom cars, jeeps and more are set up for the shows.  Along with the cars, the car show has a 50/50 drawing, music, door prizes and dining along Main Street.  The shows are 5-9pm and are a great way for families to develop or nurture an interest in cars or the hobby while also learning a little history about the different makes and models.

Children in the Dell at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens in Crestwood

Crestwood's Yew Dell Botanical Gardens has a wonderful children's program during the Spring and Summer months.

 photo Children in the Dell_zpsvrmapapt.png

photo 144eba2c-1684-41dc-86c1-6b880428af68_zpsxfmbicml.jpgChildren in the Dell is a program geared toward children ages 5-10.  Beginning in May and ending in August, this Saturday morning program is free for children with admission.  Admission to Yew Dell is free for children 5 and under and $5 for children 6-17.

For the 2019 season, Yew Dell has changed the program to an informal format.  Pre-registration is no longer required.  Per their website, "Just bring the kiddos any time during the designated hours and our talented educators will enlighten you and your children with the wonders of nature. Each session will offer some new nuggets of knowledge that kiddos can expand upon in a self-guided way in the garden."

The instructors are passionate and energetic.  Even though there will be an educator, adults are asked to stay with the children and participate too.  Children in the Dell is a great way for children to tour the grounds in a fun, engaging manner.  There is usually something the kids are looking for or gathering to go along with the theme.  During one of our visits last year, we made a bird's nest, so the children walked the grounds searching for small items birds would use to make a nest.  The children then took the items back to a workspace to make the bird's nest craft.

photo art_zpsj5pkroxf.jpgWe spent about 30 minutes walking around Yew Dell.  We met several other staff and volunteer members and got to learn about hidden areas and little treasures around Yew Dell.  This is how we discovered the Fairy Garden - definitely something everyone should stop in to see!

The program is scheduled until noon and guests are welcome to continue visiting and touring the Gardens.  Several of the families had picnics or a short hike planned for after Children in the Dell. Children in the Dell is a great way to learn more about nature, plants, vegetables and what it entails to keep up the Gardens.

Yew Dell Botanical Gardens is located at 6220 Old LaGrange Road in Crestwood.  Children in the Dell runs every Saturday through August 17, 2019.

5 Exciting Things About the Oldham County Library Summer Reading Program

 photo Summer REading Program header_zpshxeoro02.png

This post contains general information about the Summer Reading Program and 2019 dates.

Kick off  summer with the Oldham County Public Library Summer Reading Program!

1. The Learning Experiences!
Our librarians sure know how to make reading and learning super fun! They have a schedule jam-packed with different activities. The 2019 Theme is "A Universe of Stories." Readers can sign up for some hands-on learning, stories and more. There are different activities for different ages each week. Program ages begin at babies all the way up to adults. We plan to enjoy the math and science enrichment at the Space Pioneer program.  Teens and adults should not miss out on the calendar full of great programs this summer! *Special tip for families: sign ups are required for some of these programs and they usually open one week prior to each class. Check the website early in the morning or watch Facebook!

2. Family Programs!
There are a lot of programs that the kids get to do alone with the great librarians, but there are also events planned for the entire family to enjoy together.  Mark your calendars with the family concerts and movies.  We, of course, like that summer reading means that families can read together too!

3. The Special Guests!
Expect to see popular guests return like Madcap Puppets and Silly Safaris.  Oooh and ahh at Wonder Wheels and sing a long with Jim Gill. *Special tip for families: Some of these shows are first come, first serve, so make sure you watch the schedule and arrive early!

photo library pool 2_zpsurcgvlbi.png4. The Way Cool Prizes!
Not only is reading beneficial for development and continuous learning over the summer break, but the kids get rewarded for their effort!  Track your daily reading on your reading log. For every five days of reading, you earn a brag tag and a summer attraction coupon. Complete five sets of days and earn a special brag tag, a prize, and a pool party pass. Pool parties are at the Oldham County Aquatic Center!  Pool parties are scheduled the 2019 summer by elementary schools for July 29th, August 5th and 7th.  Make sure you get a pass for your pool party date!  (The parties, of course, include preschool, homeschool, private and nearby county schools, too.)

5. More and More Fun!
We love that the program includes evening and drop-in activities with such things as crafts, legos, family story time and more.  Everyone loves a good indoor movie when it's just too hot or gloomy outside.  The library has some great films lined up!  *Special tip for families: get comfy during the movie!  Bring some blankets, pillows and snacks.  Enjoy that time together!

Nachand Canoe & Kayak Rental in Prospect

We found a fun outdoor activity just outside Oldham County that you should check out this summer!

 photo NACHAND_zps1m6wocdg.png

Nachand Canoe & Kayak is located at 7001 River Road in Prospect.  We recently took a fun 4 hour kayak trip down Harrods Creek with some friends.

 photo take off spot_zpszyfwia2t.jpg
Nachand Canoe & Kayak offers kayak, canoe and paddle board rentals.  You can choose 4 or 8 hour trips.  You can also choose a single kayak or double kayak.  Prices vary for each type of rental and there's usually a 10% discount code for booking online.  Walk-up rentals are available, but it's best to make reservations ahead of time.

Our group was a mix of single and double kayak rentals.  A single kayak rental for 4 hours was $35 and the double kayak rental was $60.  After signing all necessary waivers, our group was quickly on our way down Harrods Creek.  They provide life vests, but many of our group members mentioned that they wished they had brought their personal life vests because some of the ones at Nachand were wet or damp.  We should have expected that to be the case, but didn't think of that possibility beforehand.

You can choose to venture down Harrods Creek or up toward the Ohio River and the Captain's Quarter's area. You, however, are not allowed to kayak on the Ohio River.  You will pass a few slow moving boats on Harrods Creek, but the majority of our trip was smooth, peaceful, deep water.  There were quite a lot of down trees and debris in the creek during our trip, but nothing we couldn't navigate.  One other characteristic of Harrods Creek we should mention is that there is little to no current on it.  This is a positive because trips booked on Harrods Creek do not include a designated end or pick up point.  The trip is four hours and that means you have to give yourself time to make the trip back to the launch area.  No current means you aren't paddling against it on the way back.

photo tall waterfall_zpsubxmuae6.jpgHarrods Creek offers areas of shade at some points because both banks are tree lined.  We saw several deer along the banks and turtles sunbathing on logs.  Harrods Creek Park is visible during the trip also.  The best part of the trip was the waterfall at our turn around point.  We put our kayaks on the shore, located the wet water spring entering the creek and walked a short trip up a bluff to find an amazing waterfall tucked in the woods.  Make sure you are wearing a good pair of water shoes, applied some bug spray and if possible, bring a camera.  The waterfall is beautiful and offers great photo ops.  There is a steel ladder to climb to another level of the waterfall if you choose to do so.

We saw many families enjoying the rentals either in kayaks or canoes.  There were a few children at the waterfall as well.  If your children are patient enough to endure a 4 hour long trip down Harrods Creek, we would recommend including them.  There are paddleboards for children available for rental also.  We loved doing this with other couples as a fun outdoor activity.  Make sure you pack waters and maybe some light snacks.  There are spots on the kayaks to secure small coolers.  There wasn't any instruction given to our group, so we recommend asking if it's available before you book if you're apprehensive about giving kayaking a try for the first time.  You can also bring your dog along for the ride.

Nachand Canoe and Kayak Rental is located at 7001 River Road in Prospect.  Rentals are available 7 days a week 9am-6pm
