Don & Elizabeth Buchanan Splash Pad

Sometimes you have to take a little drive to find some family fun.  Our family recently found a great splash pad just north of Oldham County.

 photo Don amp Elizabeth Buchanan_zpsugmg8mjx.png

photo IMG_7581_zpsoddvoklx.jpgThe new Don & Elizabeth Buchanan Splash Pad opened in 2019 in New Castle in the Henry County Community Park.  This new splash pad is right next to the Michael Brent Playground on Park Road.  The address given to us for the splash pad is 100 Park Road in New Castle.  Some maps are unable to locate this address.  If you are having trouble finding it, some other businesses nearby are the Henry County Health Department and Cedar Lake Park Place.  The entrance is off of Highway 421/55 about a mile outside of New Castle headed toward Campbellsburg.

There are several cool features to the splash pad including a large dump bucket, spinning water fountain and squishy pad kids can jump on to squirt out water.  Smaller fountains, smaller dump buckets, water tunnels, two squirt guns and more fun are also throughout the splash pad.  There is something to entertain all ages!  The red, white & blue splash pad also has a couple of benches around it and two picnic tables with umbrellas.

photo IMG_7567_zpsulpjt6vh.jpgIf visitors want to picnic while they're visiting the park, there is a large covered area with several more picnic tables and restrooms.  Or visitors can bring a blanket and sit in the grassy areas surrounding the splash pad.  Food is not permitted on the splash pad.

There's more to enjoy during your visit to the splash pad.  The Michael Brent Playground is an all accessible playground right next to the splash pad.  Children can go back and forth between the playground and splash pad easily and enjoy both.  If you want to explore some more, the Henry Community Park amenities includes trails, picnic areas, basketball, soccer, football fields, an accessible fishing pond and the accessible playground.

We will for sure visit the splash pad again soon.  The drive from Crestwood to the splash pad was about twenty minutes.  We took Highway 146 all the way into New Castle and turned left on Highway 421 to reach the entrance to the community park.  Wingz N Thingz is a good spot to stop on your way back home for an ice cream!  At times, there are ice cream trucks set up at the splash pad too. The Henry County Government Facebook page is a good page to follow for updates and other information.

photo IMG_7556_zpsemscu7nx.jpgMy kids enjoyed playing at the new splash pad and commented that the water was the warmest splash pad water ever.  The splash pad was very clean and we liked that the playground was nearby to enjoy as well.  The restrooms and extra shade under the picnic gazebo were also nice to have close to the splash pad.  We are grateful for this gift to the community from the Buchanan family!

The splash pad is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. Park hours are daily 10am-5:30pm and open until 8pm on Tuesday.

Hidden Hollow Orchard

Apple season starts in August and lucky for us, there's a great little orchard just on the Oldham County border in Louisville.

 photo Hidden Hollow Orchard_zpsufmysfpp.png

photo eli holding apple_zpsxq64fzju.jpgIt's almost apple picking time! Hidden Hollow Orchard is just a short drive outside of Oldham County and will open soon! Per their website, they hope to be open for picking on 8-24-19 this year!

This small apple orchard offers families an opportunity to experience true apple picking together.  It is located just off of Old Henry Road in East Louisville.  There are specific directions on the website for visitors to follow and a phone number in case you get lost.  Directions can get tricky and you might feel like you're lost, but trust the one-lane road that runs along the Fox Run neighborhood-you'll get to the Orchard, promise.

Once you arrive at the Orchard, find a spot to park along the gravel road and bushes.  You will find the prices listed near an umbrella table, along with plastic bags to use, maybe an apple picker tool and some honey for sale.

Pick an open, mowed path and you will run into the rows of apple trees.  The grass can be thick and tall, so old shoes or even rain boots are perfect for the orchard.  Some of the grass near the base of the trees is tall also, so if your skin is sensitive to grass and weeds, pants or tall socks are recommended.  Bring some buckets along with you or even a wagon for hauling your apples through the Orchard.

photo horse_zpsyuzhmuph.jpgIn years past, the rows of trees were marked with apple variety signs.  We did not see any on our visit but did manage to pick 3-4 different apple varieties.  If you pick a slightly bruised or blemished apple, use it to have a taste test.

Pack some carrots for feeding several ponies and bring cash (preferable small bills).  Apples are 35¢ each or u-pick bags for $5 or $7.  If you want to stay a little longer, there is a picnic table and areas for a picnic blanket.  There are a couple of tractors for children to explore, too.

Hidden Hollow Orchard is located at 3200 Apple Hill Road Louisville, KY 40245
Follow their Facebook page for updated information on crop availability and hours.
