Nachand Canoe & Kayak Rental in Prospect

We found a fun outdoor activity just outside Oldham County that you should check out this summer!

 photo NACHAND_zps1m6wocdg.png

Nachand Canoe & Kayak is located at 7001 River Road in Prospect.  We recently took a fun 4 hour kayak trip down Harrods Creek with some friends.

 photo take off spot_zpszyfwia2t.jpg
Nachand Canoe & Kayak offers kayak, canoe and paddle board rentals.  You can choose 4 or 8 hour trips.  You can also choose a single kayak or double kayak.  Prices vary for each type of rental and there's usually a 10% discount code for booking online.  Walk-up rentals are available, but it's best to make reservations ahead of time.

Our group was a mix of single and double kayak rentals.  A single kayak rental for 4 hours was $35 and the double kayak rental was $60.  After signing all necessary waivers, our group was quickly on our way down Harrods Creek.  They provide life vests, but many of our group members mentioned that they wished they had brought their personal life vests because some of the ones at Nachand were wet or damp.  We should have expected that to be the case, but didn't think of that possibility beforehand.

You can choose to venture down Harrods Creek or up toward the Ohio River and the Captain's Quarter's area. You, however, are not allowed to kayak on the Ohio River.  You will pass a few slow moving boats on Harrods Creek, but the majority of our trip was smooth, peaceful, deep water.  There were quite a lot of down trees and debris in the creek during our trip, but nothing we couldn't navigate.  One other characteristic of Harrods Creek we should mention is that there is little to no current on it.  This is a positive because trips booked on Harrods Creek do not include a designated end or pick up point.  The trip is four hours and that means you have to give yourself time to make the trip back to the launch area.  No current means you aren't paddling against it on the way back.

photo tall waterfall_zpsubxmuae6.jpgHarrods Creek offers areas of shade at some points because both banks are tree lined.  We saw several deer along the banks and turtles sunbathing on logs.  Harrods Creek Park is visible during the trip also.  The best part of the trip was the waterfall at our turn around point.  We put our kayaks on the shore, located the wet water spring entering the creek and walked a short trip up a bluff to find an amazing waterfall tucked in the woods.  Make sure you are wearing a good pair of water shoes, applied some bug spray and if possible, bring a camera.  The waterfall is beautiful and offers great photo ops.  There is a steel ladder to climb to another level of the waterfall if you choose to do so.

We saw many families enjoying the rentals either in kayaks or canoes.  There were a few children at the waterfall as well.  If your children are patient enough to endure a 4 hour long trip down Harrods Creek, we would recommend including them.  There are paddleboards for children available for rental also.  We loved doing this with other couples as a fun outdoor activity.  Make sure you pack waters and maybe some light snacks.  There are spots on the kayaks to secure small coolers.  There wasn't any instruction given to our group, so we recommend asking if it's available before you book if you're apprehensive about giving kayaking a try for the first time.  You can also bring your dog along for the ride.

Nachand Canoe and Kayak Rental is located at 7001 River Road in Prospect.  Rentals are available 7 days a week 9am-6pm

Sisters Tea Parlor & Boutique Fun at Home

With social distancing in place and many restaurants limited to carry-out orders, families are finding ways to be creative with dining experiences. Oldham County's local tea parlor already offered a unique dining experience and now families can find ways to enjoy tea and treats at home together.

 photo Sisters cover photo_zpsi0kk7qkc.png

photo sisters store front_zpsmjjc8zq0.jpgI wanted to plan something special for my eight year old daughter during the quarantine. She was missing friends and the weather was too rainy and cold to go outside. I saw that Sisters Tea Parlor & Boutique was still open for carry-out ordering and was offering their tea trays to-go. I ordered a take-away 3-tiered tea tray with tea for $21. This tray was plenty for the two of us to share as a treat.

Ordering was simple. I found the menu online and on their Facebook page and called in our order. They do ask for a couple of hours to prepare if you are wanting the tray the same day. Once we arrived at Sisters we called the store to let them know we were outside and they brought our treats and tea to our car.  They were packaged up pretty and ready to go.

photo tray_zpsoxkiq51m.jpgThe tray we ordered included 6 tea sandwiches and savories, 2 scones with lemon curd, 5 petite sweets and a 24 oz tea. They helped me pick out a tea that suited my taste, which was their "Buckingham Palace" tea. It was delicious and perfect! Once I got our order home, I surprised my daughter in our dining room with a special "Quaran Tea Party." I already had tea cups, candles and a tiered tray to help us feel like we were actually at Sisters Tea Parlor & Boutique. We split everything in half, I drank the hot tea and she had juice in her fancy tea cups.  We played music and discussed our favorite treats as we made our way up to the top of the tray. It was a great way to connect and enjoy each other's company.

Sisters has many other carry-out options and does offer special menus for those with allergies. Some menu items that caught my eye are the scones to go (baked or unbaked), their family bundle and a smaller 2 tiered tray to go. Their boutique is also filled with fun tea items and more.

If you're looking for a way to bring a little fun into your home when we are asked to stay home, Sisters Tea Parlor can certainly help you out. Sisters Tea Parlor & Boutique is a small business located in Buckner at 4765 Fox Run. Have a tea party at home and make it your own!

LaGrange Farmer's Market & Artisans

The LaGrange Farmers' Market & Artisans is opening for the season this weekend! On Saturday, May 9th, the market will reopen, but like most public places, there are some new safety measures in place due to COVID-19.

 photo Oldham Farmers Market LaGrange_zpsybuzutmc.png

photo farmers market food pic_zpstkf8rjj2.jpgThe LaGrange Farmers' Market is located on Main Street near the Courthouse Square. They are open on Saturdays 9am-1pm beginning in May through October 10th.  We enjoy visiting the market because it allows us to support our community farmers and artisans and go home with great products. The market has a range of items from fresh farm beef, pork, cheese products, flowers, produce, dog treats, baked goods, jewelry and more. There is a list of vendors on their website here, but check their Facebook page for weekend updates.

We love the atmosphere at the market. The peace of an early morning walk around the market is refreshing. On some mornings you might get to hear a band playing or some songs being sung by local artists and young musicians. The train rolling down the middle of Main Street also offers an unique experience while perusing the booths.

Beginning on May 9, 2020, the market is asking visitors to follow a list of guidelines while shopping. These guidelines are in place to help ensure the safety of the vendors and shoppers and align with social distancing. Below are the guidelines from the LaGrange Farmers' Market.

photo farmers market social distancing rules_zps6jgrz84p.jpg

Some of the vendors are offering pre-ordering to make purchasing and picking up product faster and safer. Again, following their Facebook page is your best bet for updated information. Luckily, since the market is on the Courthouse Square, there is some green space to help visitors spread out and enjoy their purchases.

There are also wonderful shops along Main Street in Downtown LaGrange that visitors can shop. (Retail stores are set to open on May 20th, but many have great window displays that are worth checking out before the 20th.) Downtown LaGrange has several restaurants and a coffee shop that have carry-out ordering available.

The LaGrange Farmers' Market & Artisans is located at 100 Main Street LaGrange, Ky 40031

DYO Cookie Kits from Eté Cakes

The DYO Cookie Kits from Eté Cakes are a great option for family fun while we are all at home. The cookie kits offer a way for families to enjoy some time together at home through creative decorating and of course, eating yummy cookies!

 photo Ete DYO Cookie Kits_zpswitdgq3a.png

photo box_zpsxsbmt39y.jpgIt was easy to order the cookie kits from Eté Cakes.  If you follow their Facebook page, they are always updating it with new cookie kits.  We chose their Spring "Sunshine & Rainbows" Kit, paid online (this kit was $20) and picked it up from their porch in Crestwood a few days later.  For those ordering from the northern part of the county, pickup is very close to I-71.

The kit was in a cute white box tied with a ribbon.  Inside were 15 cookies. There were four designs with this kit: a rainbow, sun, flower and butterfly.  Also included, were 3 different colors of frosting in piping bags and 2 small containers of sprinkles.  Everything inside the box was organized and the small extra details of ribbons added to the cookie bags and piping bags did not go unnoticed.  There was also an instruction sheet for getting started decorating and storing the cookies.  The whole process was pretty simple, but the attention to detail was big!

photo cookies_zpsbdca1lym.jpgAfter much finger licking and taste-testing, we all agreed that the frosting is absolutely delicious and there is a ton of it!  Families can easily bake some of their own cookies to use up the left-over frosting.  The sugar cookies were also yummy and with 15 included in the kit, we felt like it was plenty for our family of 4 to enjoy a fair amount.

Right now, Eté Cakes has Derby themed cookie kits for those of us still wanting to celebrate Kentucky's biggest day in May.  Their Facebook page has more information on ordering.

The DYO Cookie Kits are prepared with quality ingredients and details.  They offered our family a way to have fun together at home and also a unique gift for a neighbor's quarantine birthday.  Eté Cakes can customize a kit for you too. This is a small Oldham County business that we recommend supporting.

Fitz Freeze Frozen Treats

Head over to Buckner for a frozen treat from Fitz Freeze! They are opening up for the 2020 season on Friday, May 1st.
This small family business will have a drive-thru window and walk up window with social distancing in place. Hours will be Monday-Friday 4:30-8:00pm and Saturday-Sunday 2:00-8:00pm. Learn more about the treats from last year's review below.

 photo Fitz Frozen Treats_zpshrem3weg.jpg

Fitz Freeze Frozen Treats is in its third season in Oldham County.  It is located at 4411 West Highway 146 in Buckner.  You can't miss the bright blue building and signage from Highway 146 close to Buckner Elementary School and Oldham County Middle School.

photo Elin shaved ice_zpsq2lcfode.jpgWe stopped in last year to try some Hawaiian shaved ice.  With 60 flavors to choose from, it was hard to settle on a final decision.  We ended up trying Mango Tango, Cotton Candy Blue and Angel Food Cake.  Of course, we all tried each other's flavors and agreed that they were all very yummy.  There are mixes already figured out for you or you can get up to 3 flavors in your cup of your own choosing.  Some unique flavors we noticed were Banana Cream Pie, Bug Juice, and Popeye.  You'll have to visit to figure out how they taste.

This Oldham County, family-owned business has a great mission statement which visitors can read next to the order window.  The treats started out as a hobby for the children to learn how to count money and learn workforce skills to apply in the future.  They are helping in the bus and are very friendly and respectful.  The tips they receive help them earn money toward vehicles when they turn 16 and then anything extra will go toward college.  We love that this family is working together and teaching important skills.

photo ice cream sign_zpsopeglwbk.jpgWe thought the price was reasonable for the shaved ice: small $3, medium $4 and a large $5.  A small was plenty and the perfect size for my 6 year old.  Fitz Freeze also has a cream topping that you can add to your shaved ice for an extra $1.  If you're not in the mood for shaved ice, they also offer ice cream ranging in price from $2.50-$5.00.  Cash and credit cards are accepted.

Support this new treat spot and follow Fitz Freeze on Facebook to keep up with hours, specials, renting the truck and more.  There are plenty of options and space to sit under a bright blue umbrella to enjoy your treat.

Celebrate Earth Day with Feed & Seed Depot

Crestwood's Feed & Seed Depot offers a variety of ways for you to celebrate Earth Day! With so many of us at home this year, Earth Day might look a little different, but it can still be celebrated!

photo Earth Day with Feed amp Seed_zpsypfvclso.png

Our family loves all of the local nurseries, greenhouses and garden shops in Oldham County.  We decided to support one of Crestwood's small businesses by buying some Earth Day supplies from Feed & Seed Depot.  We love the warm atmosphere of this business.  The greetings from Kathy, Steve and Sadie (Steve's sweet shop pup) are the best and we always feel like we are part of the family.

photo ELIN_zps8rt90lqt.jpgThere are quite a few supplies that you can find at Feed & Seed Depot to help you celebrate Earth Day.  They offer call ahead and parking lot pick up. Here is a list of Earth Day ideas you can do using items found at the store:

Bird Feeders and Seed - We lost count of how many different feeders they had in their store! Adults and children find pleasure in bird watching and what a fun addition to your yard or windowsill. The hummingbird feeders are our favorite. They have several other feeds for all kinds of animals - squirrel, deer and dogs.  Our animal friends are a part of our Earth, too! Pinterest is full of all kinds of birdseed projects that you can do at home.  I'm sure we all have plenty of empty toilet paper rolls ready to be covered in birdseed!

Garden Seeds - Steve said that their huge variety of garden seeds have been very popular right now as families are getting their gardens ready or starting a new one for the first time this year. If you've thought about starting a garden, Feed & Seed Depot can help you! They welcome questions and love to help.

photo garden seeds_zpsymotcjl9.jpgFlower Garden Seeds - We're stuck at home, so our homes are getting a lot of attention that we didn't necessarily have time for in the past.  Flowers are a great way to spruce up your outdoor space and help our pollinators!  We chose to plant some lavender for our backyard because we love the smell of it and are hoping to attract some butterflies this summer.  Feed & Seed had the lavender, soil and pots all in their store! Families can paint and decorate the pots with special Earth Day 2020 messages to remember the day.

We encourage you to support our small businesses in Oldham County this Earth Day and every day! Feed & Seed Depot is just one of the wonderful stores that can help you celebrate Earth Day or any other outdoor project.  Some other area shops to consider are:

Reardon's Market
Starview Greenhouses
Goodwin Greenhouse
Deibel Greenhouse
Yew Dell Botanical Gardens - plant sale

photo bird feeders_zpsre2pz3vy.jpgLouisville Family Fun also has some great ideas for celebrating Earth Day this year! For more ideas, click here! You might find a great small business to support from their list too! Happy Earth Day! Stay safe and healthy!

Louisville Family Fun also offers a TON of resources for having fun, shopping, learning and more during the quarantine.  Check out their Social Distancing tab here!

Walking Trail at the Oldham County Family YMCA

The Oldham County Family YMCA has wonderful trails that are a great place for families to enjoy the outdoors while social distancing. We recently checked it out for ourselves.

 photo YMCA Walking Trail_zpsvk2qfheu.png

Our family is always looking for ways to enjoy family time outdoors.  The recent COVID-19 quarantine has our family yearning for outdoor time more than usual. Luckily, our local YMCA offers a place for families to enjoy any time of year.

photo balance_zpskoxpoexj.jpg We learned about the trails while listening to the YMCA's podcast The Lowdown at the Lodge. The entrance to the gravel trails can be accessed at the front and back of the building. There are three additional trails within the wooded area.  We started on the gravel trail and then veered down in the inner trail.  Once we were on the inner trail, we came across a small creek with several wooden bridges for crossing.  The creek would be a great place for kids to explore in their rainboots or for your four legged walking buddies to splash around in too.

Along the trails you will also find several of the YMCA's Family Mud Run obstacles.  Some of them can be enjoyed without touching them with your hands.  You will also find a disc golf course along the trails.  We did encounter a group playing disc golf, but the area is big enough and the trails wide enough that we were never in each other's ways.

photo disc golf_zpstouzgwfw.jpg The trails total 3.25 miles.  There is some incline in some areas as well as rocks, but nothing was too strenuous.  We also found it easy to change course and pick a new trail if we didn't want to go in a certain area.  The trails are gravel, grass and dirt (which were a little muddy in some areas because of the rain the previous night).

photo bridge_zpsgolg0bgm.jpgA part of the Oldham County YMCA's mission statement is to help build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.  The trails at the Buckner location certainly benefit the community's well-being.  It's a great way for families to get outside together while still social distancing.

The Oldham County YMCA is located at 20 Quality Place in Buckner.

Hiking & Walking Trails in Oldham County, KY

Let's get moving this Spring!

photo Hiking amp Walking Trails Header_zps75sgdn73.png

The county has a variety of trails for all skill levels and distances - something for everyone!  Below is a list of some of our favorite areas to get out and explore with your family!

2020 - Please maintain proper social distancing and follow all guidelines at the parks during the pandemic. Stay on the trails or open spaces, do not use playgrounds! This post was written during non-quarantine period.

Crestwood

Briar Hill Park includes a nice paved path, creek, a natural path and according to KYMBA currently there are mountain bike trails under construction. Restrooms, playground, tennis courts and sand volleyball court. Free, operated by Oldham County Parks & Recreation.

Fox Hollow Farm has hiking trails and horse trails for members of the Brownsboro Alliance

Peggy Baker Park has a new paved walking path.

The Maples Park has a paved walking path.

Yew Dell Gardens boasts more than a mile of hiking trails, three woodland ponds, and loads of space to get away from it all in the terrific garden spaces with numerous walks and neat buildings. Visitors can access trails through the gate at the base of the meadow below the castle.  (Make sure you close the gate behind you to keep deer from entering the gardens!) Explorer backpacks and a scavenger hunt game are available for families to check out, too! Restrooms are available. See admission and hours on their website.

Pewee Valley

Central Park is a beautiful place for a quick, quiet stroll. Train lovers can walk over to the red caboose for a photo opp.  Free, community led project.

There is a sidewalk that will take you from Crestwood to Pewee Valley down Hwy 146.  Walk straight down 146 or veer off down one of the great sideroads.

LaGrange

photo hiking 1_zpsh1ipmvag.jpgMorgan Conservation Park is a hidden gem with several trails (some steep, but worth it), good sized creek that begs exploration, small waterfalls, an old barn, ponds, a glade, meadows, and an old family burial site. No restrooms. Perfect to pair with a stop for the tastiest ice cream pies ever at Knock on Wood Country Mercantile in Westport and a visit to the little riverside Westport Park with restrooms, playground, and picnic tables for enjoying your well-earned treat! Both parks free, operated by Oldham County Parks & Recreation.

Wendell Moore Park offers great paved paths with some running alongside the water. Paved paths can be located past the football fields. Visitors can choose to do the measured loops or continue around all the way back to the playground or even farther connecting to the next property via the path behind the John W. Black Aquatic Center. Restrooms, playground, tennis, covered picnic areas and more! An added bonus is that you can fish at a floating dock or from the bank.  Free, operated by Oldham County Parks & Recreation. (Park located in Buckner area.)

Wilborn Park is near L&N Lake where you can see (but not feed) lots of geese. There are no hiking trails available, but there is a tiny nature exploration off to the side, as you enter the park, with pretty photo opportunities.  There is also plenty of room to stretch your legs in the park, walking around the L&N Lake trail that includes several wooden bridges. Restrooms and playground. Free, operated by City of La Grange.

Oldham County Greenways has, in addition to the great paths at Wendell Moore Park, completed several other projects and has an inspired master plan to bring more safe pedestrian and bike trails that will preserve and enhance the natural environment and outdoor recreational opportunities, for the quality of life for citizens, visitors, and wildlife. Check out their site for other places to venture! Commerce Parkway is great for walking and bike riding!

Goshen

Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve is a wonderful place with numerous trails, a paved path, woodland garden, ponds, small seasonal waterfall, lots of places to rest, nature center open during special events & limited weekdays, and so much more! Restrooms and playground. Free, donor supported.

Buckner

Oldham YMCA Outdoor Walking Trail is available to the community for those who want a breath of fresh air.  YMCA members can enjoy all of the other popular facilities and fitness opportunities they offer.

Prospect

Belknap Community Park at Lion’s Club is a nice quick stop with a short loose gravel trail around the perimeter of property and small seasonal waterfall. Small, old-school playground. No restrooms. Free, supported through event rentals at the facility.

 photo hiking 2_zpsf2qtm4zk.jpgProspect (Jefferson County)

Harrods Creek Park is a fantastic space that has several trails, one of which goes alongside the creek with swinging benches to rest or enjoy the view. Other trails offer more challenge and a good variety. No restrooms. Free, operated by City of Prospect.

Hays Kennedy Park features a short walking or biking paved path, but many don’t realize there is the lovely Garvin Brown Preserve on the other side with charming pastoral views, pretty hiking trails, and even access to a fun little spot on the river. Restrooms, playground and basketball available on the park side. Free, park operated by City of Louisville and preserve provided by River Fields.

Little Hunting Creek Park has a fun little shallow stream and very short trail that may eventually connect to Putney Pond trails. No restrooms. Free, operated by City of Prospect.

Putney Pond & Woodlands offers a few trails with some steep areas.  You can also walk over to the pond. This park will eventually connect to Hunting Creek Park Trail. No restrooms. Free, operated by City of Prospect.

Quarantine Spring Break Fun

This year's Spring Break will look very different for most of us this year. Our family is still looking forward to it despite having to stay home and find creative ways to enjoy the break and make do with what is available to us.

photo Copy of OFF Spring Consignment_zpsd28i5eke.png

Here are some ideas for you and your family using the acrostic: STAY SAFE.  Please remember to follow guidelines put in place by our local and state governments to help decrease the spread of COVID-19.  We want you guys to have fun, but also want you and your children to remain safe.

STAY SAFE SPRING BREAK

S - Schedule outdoor time.  Many of our area parks and state parks are still open, but with a few restrictions in place. Playgrounds may be closed, so be sure to discuss this with your children before arriving.  Arrange for other activities to do at the park. Some ideas that allow for social distancing: picnic, hike (check out our list here), bird watch, fish or ride a bike. Some restroom facilities are also closed at area parks, so plan accordingly.

T - Transform your home into your cancelled Spring Break plans.  Recreate your vacation using what you have at home.  Were you planning to go to the beach?  Find a beach screen saver and broadcast it on your television or other device.  Play some tropical music, dress in your best beach attire, put down some beach towels and drink some frozen drinks from a fun cup or straw.  Think of the fun you could have if Disney World was your planned destination! Were you planning to stay in the mountains? Pop up a tent in the backyard or basement!

A - Appoint your children as official party planners! Have them brainstorm a theme, get dressed up, decorate, prepare some fun, nontraditional snacks or a meal.

Y - YouTube a new skill, game, hobby or anything really! Is there something you and your family want to learn and never found the time?  Well, now is a great time! Learn how to start a garden, play your dusty guitar, code, art! The possibilities are endless!

S - Serve others. Serving others can be as simple as popping an encouraging note in your neighbor's newspaper box.  Write a handwritten note and mail it to loved ones that are stuck inside. Start a collection for food, household or other items.  Place an encouraging sign on your mailbox thanking your postal workers, garbage disposal workers and others helping the community.

A - Arrange a neighborhood or family game of bingo, a scavenger hunt, Yahtzee, Pictionary or any other game that allows for social distancing.  Zoom is a great, free way to connect with large groups using a phone or computer.

F - Find some time for you and your spouse/significant other to reconnect, but have your kids plan the fun stay at home date night! You can help them prepare a small meal or get takeout from an Oldham County restaurant.  They can set a fancy table for you using your nice dishes, candles and flowers found outside.  Find a list of appropriate and fun questions they can ask about the two of you. For more help, we found this great Date Night list here.

E - Enjoy the downtime! Spring Break doesn't have to entail spending a ton of money or running from place to place.  Schedule a movie marathon with your family.  If you can't find a series on Netflix or another streaming service, ask neighbors, family or friends if they have DVDs you can borrow.  An outdoor movie around a campfire sounds like a lot of fun! Stargaze while you're out in the dark!
